Shielding Gases

Shielding gases are required arc and laser welding, and are sometime used in resistance welding.  In addition to shielding the molten metal, they provide other functions including improved wetting, reducing oxides, and flushing away the plume.  The article at the link below gives a good overview of all the typical and some unusual options available to the welding engineer.
